Bobby Chiu digital painting class, assignment 3!

Yo! A new week a new assignment! so- lets get working :D
This week I am approaching my blog in a different way. I will be writing it as I am completing each day, I hope this will will give a better flow so I can write as I have been thinking instead of rattling my brain at the end of every week.
I am approaching the assignments differently as I am doing the first lesson the first half of the week and the second part during the second half of the week, I want to focus my attention on one thing at a time and try and perfect it as much as I can. I want to learn everything I can from this class as I suck at digital painting.

Day 1!:
20 minutes
This was what I could achieve in 20 minutes, roughly what Bobby spent on his piece, I struggled to get my darks dark, however I kept pushing and i focused my attention on the hood of the jacket to begin with because I wanted the focus to be more so on the middle of the piece, I then worked on the nose and facial features and then blocked in the glasses. I was only focusing mainly on the darks here but I added a bit of highlights here and there to help me to try and visualise more of the forms.

60 minutes
I decided to give myself 40 more minutes so I could try and push myself a little more. I stood back and analysed and saw that the hood seemed like it was not separate from the jumper so I tried to fix that and go in and make more things darker, keep playing with the flow and opacity, still only using a hard round brush. As you can see on the cheek I used a too high of a opacity stroke and i couldn't work back into it and it created a weird effect that made it look like the image has a weird effect on it.. I did try and put more lights here but it hard to make them out- this piece still looks flat.

Day 2:
No time limit!
Ok, this time I just decided to work on this, focus in and try and make things DARK! Maybe i pushed it a little too dark.. this time I kept flow and opacity both pretty high so I can really get the darks and the lights in there. I feel like by doing this I held back on the face, the clothing really overpower the piece. I feel like this has made the face look really flat. When I do this for day 3 I think I will try not to hold back so much.

Day 3:
Once again, this was me trying to work outside the time limit. I don't think I am that good at this but I want to keep pushing myself. For this one I wanted to be able to push the lights more so then the darks to see if I could make it more 3d looking. I think adding a white tone behind him has helped since it pushes him forward. I think I will have one more go at this assignment just to really try and push on more

Day 4:
Ok! A new day a new approach, For every other attempt of the assignment I have done, I started with the darks. but this time I attempted to start with the lights, And today I decided to put a time limit of 40 minutes. I focused a lot of this and really tried to put my all. I feel like I should of pushed the shadows a lot more. I worked with a higher opacity and flow brush, just to push it as much as I could in the 40 minute time frame.

now onto the second half of the lesson, which is very similar to the first half but its blocking it out yourself instead of using the stencil underneath. Lets get on with the show!

Day 5:
Getting into this I was thinking- I am ok with portraits! Its what I focused on during BTEC and A-level days. However I am more used to drawing it out first and getting the scale of everything. This was.... a lot. I think I will need to do this again for a few more days since I am so used to relying on line. This task was 60 minutes long and I did it along with Bobby and I am amazed at how he works. It has inspired me to continue and keep pushing on. there's a lot to improve here and i need to dedicate more time to the light areas. I think I sharpened the facial features a lot. i am sorry I have made you look like an evil villain, art germ.

Day 6:
Another day another example of me being terrible at drawing hats! But I decided to have another pop at this since I wasn't happy with my last one, I wanted to get it a little more accurate. I feel like I got the shapes off the face not AS angular but I ended up making the back of the head too short! The value structure looks a little similar to the other one i still need to push the lighter sides. I need to get so much better at brush control, i found in the first task I was doing ok but trying to apply it is having a bit of a block for me I am going to have one more try at this task tomorrow. Still keeping the time frame for this to one hour to really try and push myself the most.

the final day! Day 7!:
The last pop! I spent an hour on this again, every single time i do this it looks completely different. I think I have learnt a lot this week but I think I am coming to the point where I should practice this in my own time and try and move onto the next lesson. I think this once has better proportions then the other ones but I feel like the values aren't pushed enough because I was thinking about the proportions so much,
