Bobby chiu assignment part 4! a colourful time :D

Today we learnt about how to colour from greyscale! Hurray!! But... I am still awful with colours. I am going to format this blog post pretty much like the last one. Writing the blog as I am attempting the assignment. I have just finished the first crack so lets dive in straight to the action!

Day 1:

And here is day 1's results! I used the colour layer to add the colours and then multiply to readjust the levels after I coloured. I noticed my painting is very messy recently but I think using the layer masks have really helped I think if i didnt use masks it would be a lot more messy. As you can see I cant stick to a colour theme and, as I did have a lot of fun, I need to really think before I put colours on. I think I need to watch some feedback before I tackle this tomorrow as I think I need a bit more help and push. Onto tomorrow! Let's go!

Day 2:

Day 2 was fun! Well, I had a lot of fun. I think i ruined the read by playing with the values and tried to pull the cowboys forward I wanted to plat with pink and sparkles to add a little fun to this! I cant seem to get the skin tones to pop out and i am not sure how to darken or lighten the skin tones. I will keep trying tomorrow to practice this way of painting, so far its really fun!

Day 3:

I first started this the same as others, but then my boyfriend presented a challenge: "why not do a nighttime scene?" I never really do too many nighttime scenes (Apart from drawtober) But I thought this would be a fun opportunity. I did the standard cheat of making the scene more blue. I wanted to have lighting of a flash light effect to I tried to add harsher form shadows to our cowboys! I also chose a bit more sensible colours for cowboys to make this piece seem more serious. I am finding with this assignment that I can chose the feelings with the colours and lighting scheme.

Day 4:

Today! I decided to do things a little different.. I wanted to mix this class and the last class (part 3) This took a lot longer to do then I expected (most of today) but I think I learnt so much from this one task. I wanted to draw out some line work and give myself a base to get the likeness of the man (image taken from pinterest)  and once I finished this stage I added a few blocks of value and structure underneath before lowering the line work and adding more and more value over the top- using nothing but the hard round brush! changing the opacity and flow as I am working. I didn't have a greyscale layer over the reference so the values were eyeballed from the coloured reference.

I think I could of pushed it more but when I left it at this stage I thought it was a little accurate. However as I moved onto putting on the colour layers I realised there was so much more I could of pushed. So after I added the colour layers I added a bit of a multiply later and went over some of the areas and started to fix it. I then added a little more texture to things here and there. And I think overall I didn't do so awful, I am happy that I spent a longer time on this once because usually
with this classes I will work on it for a morning but focusing on this the whole day was a good challenge.

((sorry if these images look awkward i struggle to use blogger but hey ho!))

Day 5:

Today I just wanted to take it easy so I can have time for my other projects and preparing for my next project with my university. I wanted to do a still life and I pulled up a picture of some lemons and put on 20 minutes and worked the same process I did as yesterday.

Overall I really enjoyed this class. I really like using greyscale and then colour layer process, I think its helping me understand value a lot more and i think by doing this I am going to get a better value structure. However doing this I feel like I will have to do a lot more colour painting studies on the side so I can get a better understanding of colour theory so I can make my images pop
