AtomHawk 2021: The return!

Hello! A lot has happened since my last post. I graduated university! With a 2:1! Im actually a little proud of myself. As someone who failed their GCSE art and their A-level art I am happy to get a grade like this. I still have so much to learn! I am pursuring a masters starting in September, so this next step in my journey is very exciting. However in the mean time I wanted to par-take in the Atomhawk 2021 competition! The Brief: The return...

When I think of the word "return"  I think of coming back to something of value or significance to my life. I started to write out scenarios and ideas I had but the one that stayed in my mind was the idea of a cat lover coming home after a long day at work to all her cats. I wanted to imagine that the cats think that her work was far away and thought it would be fun to have a bit of a space theme. I thought her place of work should of been mars and i was trying to go for a retro idea of space travel. Therefore I wanted to try and make her furniture look a little dated but still modern.

So! The first stop! Character ideas. I waned to play around with style as I wanted it to be whimsical and fun. I wanted to make it bright and saturated. So I started by trying to play around with proportions and how realistic I can make the face or how stylised. I really liked the first one's face and the last ones outfit. So I merged them together. I then wanted to play around with the expressions to give myself an idea of how I want the characters personality. I wanted to make her someone who works hard for feeding her many cats as someone who loves them! She gets excited by cats even if shes half asleep most of the time. I wanted even her accessory to have a cat on it. I did all of these sketches in traditional and then went in with a bit of clean up in digital
Next line of action is to work on the house and environment! Now this was done freehand on paper on my break at work, so it is VERY wonky. but originally I wasnt sure on how I wanted to frame the piece so I had a crack at designing both. I was thinking about pink and cute colours.
However, the more I went into 3D the more I added and played around with.
3D was fun for me to experiment with, using blender is very fun and i made a simple block out. No, dont ask to see the wireframe as its awful! haha! i decided i wanted to do an interior shot and have hints of a space ship so i kept trying to frame it in the window.

Here is my process! with the character sketch and expression redrawn in clip studio! my painting process was to use the 3D model, sketch out blocks of the cats and character, and then line it all up! II wanted to try and have strong line art so it became easier in the painting process so i didn't noodle back and forth. i then coloured and rendered, however i ended up going back and forth trying to make the cats look... more like cats...
and here is the final piece! I played around with the lighting and saturation. I had issues with the perspective and trying to keep everything consistent. I wanted to add so much texture and try and make everything flow well/

I hope ive done ok, I learnt a lot from doing this.

see you in the next one!
