Hi! I realised something recently... I really suck at composition! And colour.. and lighting... So there was one option.. Still life! I need to learn to really observe from life and take time with painting it, life all day (since I have housemates living with me and i currently paint in the kitchen since i don't have much of a desk..) But alas! Here are a few still life's I attempted. I tried to theme them and set them up in a story telling way. My poor housemates and boyfriend watching me run around trying to find kitchen items.
Here is the first still life I tried! I had the lamp on the floor pointing up at the still life and the kitchen lights on. So I first painted in the local colours and used the lasso tool to make the shapes. I then blacked out the shadows and kept painting and rendered I had a lot of challenge with getting the colours correct with the warm yellow light on the light blue bowl. I feel like I don't understand colour theory so much. I then turned off the kitchen light...
I recently took a few courses on schoolism and the Tonko house colour and light approach I really liked, so when i turned off the light I played around with the adjustment layers to try and get the same effect of the light being off. I feel like I still have a lot to learn so I will keep taking classes. I think a lot are really advanced compared to my knowledge however I will try, and then I will revisit my notes once I am smarter and stronger haha!
Here's today's still life!! I started by trying to get a strong value pass down .. I then exaggerated the values as I was painting which was unintentional but I kept thinking about how I could push the painting to make it look more true to life. I spent about 3 hours on the value pass/ sketch, and then about 7 hours on the rendering and the colouring. I really tried to get the subsurface scattering down on the fruits and the reflection of the lamp on the bottle. It was a little hard for me to understand the texture of the book since it has a shiny finish to it and the bounce light of the pepper interacting with it.
Both the still life paintings were about 2 weeks between each other I think i understand a little more on colour and lighting but I will keep this up. I have been drawing a few in my sketchbook. I have been thinking a lot more about spacing and perspective as well. I hope this also comes through in my paintings. Once I am home from uni I might go through my traditional portfolio and try and find my still lives from 4 years ago. But I think I will be too embarrassed to even think about posting them on here,
