Hatching and Mark making

wow, What a crazy few months it has been, I hope everyone is still saying safe from this virus and is washing their hands. I am back back back again with blog posts!
This week I have been looking into hatching and different ways to mark make to try experiment with the results. We decided to keep the hatching digitally instead of traditionally due to the fact the 1. I left all my traditional stuff at home in Leeds (I have been quarantined with my boyfriend) and 2. I need to get a lot better at digital drawing and mark making!
I found this week to be very interesting and it helped me let go of a lot of weird fears I have when coming to mark making and over thinking everything by going to a formula each day (Apart from the last day where I experiment with different types!)

Note: All of these were worked on for 45 minutes. No more no less.
Here's the first! This challenge was to only use curved lines, I found interestingly enough I used a lot of long swooping lines for this challenge, I really struggled to build value with using this type of mark, I feel like this looks very messy and not my best work at all. However i did learn a lot about experiment with mark making and drawing facial structure. However I really really had fun with this. My goals for the next one was to make it less messy

Here is my second piece, using horizontal lines, as you can tell, not all them are straight! This one made me realise that I need to get better at drawing horizontal lines without making them slightly diagonal. However I like the effect on this piece, I like how it makes the piece feel more intense

Day three!! Only using diagonal lines. I feel like I struggled with this one again, But i feel like I learn with my struggles. I really lost the face in this piece. however, I really like how the head scarf looks in this piece, Drawing like this is getting me to conciser how I can draw texture more since I really struggle with texture.

Here is the fourth piece. I think I straightened the fact far too much compared to the reference, I wonder if its because I used straight lines on this that I naturally straightened her face.
The fifth piece is looking towards an artist and trying to replicate the hatching used. I decided to choose Topi to look at. I decided to try and control my line weight more and conciser the white space and breathing room I had fun really trying to make the lines more expressive and try and follow form.
Here is my sixth and final post of the week. Here is me testing out multiple ways of hatching. I really feel like I enjoyed the way I drew the fabric in this. However I feel like the way I hatched the face looks very harsh and doesn't capture the woman's expression.

I feel like I did better capturing the materials on the head scarf then anything else. Which is strange since I'm someone who usually focuses a lot on facial expressions and capturing the face more then anything. But I will defiantly experiment with hatching more but instead of portraits but things such as rocks and leafs to try and try and use hatching to better understand texture. However it is making me think about form a lot more. I can't wait to see where else I can experiment with mark making!
