Values!

While finishing up for uni deadlines and starting new projects, I have been taking more of Johnathan Hardesty's "Essentials of realism." class. I have been focusing on values, since it is evident from my last post that they're not my forte...

Something that I NEEDED was to use only hard brush, since using rendering is something that will allow me to almost cheat. I also got a portfolio review recently and was told my rendering is my strongest element, so I know for now I need to back away from relying on it and to focus elsewhere to build myself more and more. I have learnt from this class that values are a lot more important then the small details since us as humans recognise things in values and shapes.
Something I also learnt (where I have been going very wrong) was that when doing values, instead of thinking how the value fits in the piece as a whole, but its relationship between the values next to it, this is so you don't over exaggerate the values leaving the piece looking unrealistic.

DOING CORRECT VALUE AND SHAPE HELPS YOU TO SET UP YOUR DRAWING! The rest should fall into place.

So for this exercise I first started with the piece on the left (5 values). for the outline I traced from the reference image so I could focus more on the values rather on capturing the proportions. Once I had everything in place I thought about how I should pick the values. In the lesson the advise was that you should pick out 2 values in the dark and 3 in the light. Darkest dark, Lightest dark, Darkest light, Mid light, Brightest light. You need to make sure your values make sense from afar, then they will look good up close. So knowing this I started to paint. The first piece I feel like I over did it and started to noodle, I am someone who is used to painting in detail and rendering so I need to shake off that mindset.

On the left piece I decided to not only practice value but to try and capture the proportions using the technique I learnt in the last lesson. I then moved onto the line art. I then choose THREE values so I could think in nothing but light, medium, dark. I painted the base down in the medium colour and used the line art to plot where I wanted my lights and darks, I then erased my line art and tried to get the finishing touches.

I know I have a long way to go with this so I will try and practice values each night while working on my uni projects and side projects.
I have a long way to go but I'm driven. I have been also looking at new ways of constructing and how to think in planes to make my work more three dimensional. But once again, I need to learn not to run ahead and to really try and focus. I am trying to absorb all the information I can like a sponge. So I'm trying not to overload my brain and have all of this go to waste.
